Everyday we get asked ‘when do you sleep?’ We’ll talk about our schedules another time but the answer is yes, we sleep the right amount a night — just not all at once. And yes, we are up when the newsletter goes out at 6AM ET. After that, we go back to bed.

Anyone who has worked in a newsroom would describe the unique adrenaline rush you get right before air time, or in our case, publish time. Which does not exactly make it easy to fall into a restful slumber.

And since we’re not going to drink wine at 6am, we’ve had to come up with an arsenal of Skimm tricks to get the job done:

theSkimm Way to Fall Back Asleep

  1. Make dinner…In your mind. No, really. Close your eyes and think of the dream meal you’d like to cook, and in your mind, go through all the steps to get that dinner ready. In Skimm A’s case, it’s always spaghetti with homemade tomato sauce. Nothing brings Zzzzs quite like mincing garlic in your head at 6am
  2. CBAs…Sing the alphabet backwards. Warning: do not freak out when you get stuck, you are not having a stroke, as Skimm B once thought she was. Warning 2: You will soon realize you can get quite good at this and it will lose its efficacy over time.
  3. Count backwards…Put The Count to shame and start from 500.
  4. “Wake me when it’s time to Skimm”…We made sleep masks for a reason.
  5. Read up on war…Nothing like a good book about the war of 1812 to get your eyelids into gear.

NEW ENTREPRENEUR LESSON OF THE DAY: If your company has odd hours, find helpful workarounds.
