In our first installment of Stories from theSkimm’rs, we bragged about the power of our community. And told you we were going to start telling their stories. The first one was about how one of our Skimm’bassadors set up a pen pal system to support another SB, whose husband had been deployed. In less than 24 hours every writing time slot was filled.

It’s time for Stories from theSkimm’rs Vol. 2.

Today, we thought we would match the spring theme and talk baseball. In case you don’t have Skimm Ahead or you’re the type of person who will PTFO before the seventh-inning stretch…baseball season has started.

If ever there were a team who could pull at a fan’s heartstrings, it was the Lovable Losers. Year after year, fans waited for their turn to win. But the Billy Goat had other plans. Finally, after 108 years of losing, the Cubs pulled out a World Series win in the most dramatic fashion — with a ten-inning, 8–7 victory that involved a rain delay.

A lot of people did not think they would ever see the Cubs win in their lifetime. And for fans who had grown up rooting for this team — only to see them lose — and to a city that continued to have faith, this meant a lot.

Someone put a box of chalk outside of Wrigley Field so people could write the names of fans who had not lived long enough to see the Cubs win.

Right after the victory, Skimm’bassador Whitney Carnevale wrote in the Facebook group (the one you can’t be in unless you’re a SB) asking if anyone near Wrigley Field would write the name of her friend’s father, Dan. Dan had passed away in 2007. He was a huge Cubs fan who never got to see his team win.

Another Skimm’bassador, Megan, replied on the thread and said that she was going to the field that weekend and would write Dan’s name on the wall. Then dozens more SBs commented asking if Megan could write their friends and relatives names as well.

Megan accepted the challenge. And her husband got in on it too. By the time they got to the stadium, the wall was filled with names. Luckily another SB, Molly, had got to Wrigley first and found a spot for Dan’s name on the ground.

Try to spy Dan’s name

But Megan had a long list of requests and needed to find spots for the other names. The solution: her husband (aka Spider-Man) scaled a wall. Afterwards, Megan sent each SB a photo of their departed Cubs fan’s name written outside of Wrigley.

Megan’s husband getting the job done

Katy was one of the SBs who asked Megan to write a loved one’s name on the Wrigley wall. She printed and framed the photo of her late husband’s grandfather’s name, and gave it to family members for Christmas. Below is a picture of them with their framed copies, holding up a “Thank you, Megan” sign.

Here is what Megan has to say about all this:

“It was truly an amazing and life-changing experience… I was so afraid that I would miss someone, we spent over two hours at the wall checking and double checking names and Facebook posts…After I sent the emails with the pictures I received amazing thank you notes [from] the people whose name we wrote… and what having their name on that wall truly meant to their families.”
